How to activate Remote desktop support

We use "VNC server" to enable us to conect to client desktops to provide remote desktop support. To guarantee security, an encrypted tunnel is created using "puTTY" to ensure the computer is always safe and secure. This also ensures that access can only be made when the client requests and supervises it. These instructions should only be followed for a computer behind a firewall or router or where you fiully trust other directly connected computers. If you are unsure, contact support or your account manager.

To complete this process, you need to have obtained the following details from support: 

• Remote username
• Remote password
• Remote hostname / IP
• Remote port number

Download and Install RealVNC

To download VNC Server, you will need to read and accept the license prior to downloading VNC. If you are using a Microsoft desktop (Win9x,NT,20xx,Vista) you should select the "VNC Free Edition for Windows, executable version". The download location is here: http://www.realvnc.com/products/free/4.1/download.html

Once you have selected the file, click and save. Make a note of which folder it saves to on your hard drive. It may be easiest to save it on your Desktop.

To install, double click the VNC program you have just downloaded. If asked what you want to run the file, click Run
Click Next, then read and accept the locense. The program will normally install in C:\Program Files\RealVNC\VNC4, f you change this, make a note of where you install it.
Click Next to install both the Server and Viewer, then Next again for where t will place shortcuts. Again, agree to the defaults on the Next screen. then click Install to Install.
This should install, then bring up a VNC Server Properties dialog box, firstly asking for a password.
Click Configure For the password, you should set this and make a note, we will need this in order to access your desktop.
That should be all you need to change, so click OK, then Next, then Finish

That's got VNC installed, now we need to install ther tunnel.

Download and install puTTY

Using your web browser, visit http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html and download putty.exe to your computer. Make a note of where you have saved this to. Once downloaded, run the program.

You will be prompted to enter a hostname or IP address and port number, these are the remote host and port as supplied by support.

On the left windows, down near the bottom select "tunnels" which is under Connections, SSH.

Set the "source port" to 15900 and "destination port" to  "localhost:5900"
Select Remote, then click Add.
This should set "R15900 localhost:5900" in the window above

Then go to SSH in the left window, and tick the "Don't start a command or shell at all" box
Next,  go up to "Session" at the top in the left Window, add a name,  "OpusVL" for example,  in the
Saved Sessions box, and click Save

Then click Open . That should open a window which should ask:
"login as:" - Here, you need to enter the remote username provided

The server will respond with:
<remote user>@<remote host>'s password:

You now need to enter the remote password.
