How to activate Remote desktop supportWe use "VNC server" to enable us to conect to client desktops to provide remote desktop support. To guarantee security, an encrypted tunnel is created using "puTTY" to ensure the computer is always safe and secure. This also ensures that access can only be made when the client requests and supervises it. These instructions should only be followed for a computer behind a firewall or router or where you fiully trust other directly connected computers. Download and Install RealVNCTo download VNC Server, you will need to read and accept the license prior to downloading VNC. If you are using a Microsoft desktop (Win9x,NT,20xx,Vista) you should select the "VNC Free Edition for Windows, executable version". The download location is here: http://www.realvnc.com/products/free/4.1/download.html Once you have selected the file, click and save. Make a note of which folder it saves to on your hard drive. It may be easiest to save it on your Desktop. To install, double click the VNC program you have just downloaded. If asked what you want to run the file, click Run Download and install puTTYUsing your web browser, visit http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html and download putty.exe to your computer. Make a note of where you have saved this to. Once downloaded, run the program. You will be prompted to enter a hostname or IP address and port number, these are the remote host and port as supplied by support. On the left windows, down near the bottom select "tunnels" which is under Connections, SSH. Set the "source port" to 15900 and "destination port" to "localhost:5900" The server will respond with: You now need to enter the remote password. |
