The Amazon Kindle is an electronic device designed for reading e-books and other digital media, platformed by Amazon.com and is now available for the UK market.

The first appliance was released in the United States on November 19th 2007 and has since been followed by 2 other hardware devices known as; Kindle 2, and Kindle DX, also on March 3rd 2009 a "Kindle for iPhone" application for the Apple iPhone was created, all these platforms are based on Linux-2.6.10.

Users can select their reading material through a computer at the Amazon Kindle store/ Kindle Store which upon the initial launch in November 2007 had more than 88,000 digital titles available for download, steadily increasing to more than 275,000 in the late 2008, and as of July 1st 2009, there were more than 300,000 books available for download. This is provided by an internationally available direct connection to Amazon over the mobile phone network so books can be purchased anytime, anywhere. There is no monthly subscription to the service, the cost of connection is covered within the ebook purchase.

The original Kindle device with its 250MB of internal memory, and 6inch (diagonal) display was retailed in the U.S for $399, but then was lowered by Amazon subsequently the price to $359 and finally $299.

The 250MB of internal memory in the Original Amazon Kindle can hold approximately 200 non-illustrated titles, but is easily expandable with an SD memory card. This model is no longer available, as it was replaced by the Kindle 2 with its 2GB internal memory.
