97% of Malaysian Government use Open Source Software.

A recent report by OpenSource.org has revealed that the majority of the Malaysian government (703 of 724 agencies) is using open source.  In July 2004 the government began using the OSS Master Plan which was launched to guide, support and monitor the implementation of open source throughout its departments. This was followed in June 2007 with a plan to accelerate the use of OSS . Currently 87% of departments are using MySQL and Linux for back end infrastructure and 66% are using OSS on the desktop eg OpenOffice and Firefox web browser.

In the last six years it is believed that the change to open source technology has saved the Malaysian government  RM188.39 million in propriety licensing costs alone (around £39.23 million).
