Open Source Software is SecureThe largest code security survey has been undertaken by Veracode, one of the leaders in application risk management. The study looked over 1600 internally developed open source, commercial and outsourced applications and found that 58 - 88% of all applications submitted for verification to them failed to make it through the first round of security tests. Open Source software was found to be as secure and in some cases more secure than commercial software with fewer potential backdoors. In fact less than 1% of the security issues were potential backdoor risks The transparency of the open source community was credited with keeping this figure so low. It also discovered that any risks that were highlighted were dealt with more quickly and efficiently than any other commercial software.
